Business Culture throughout China
Business Culture in Beijing
  • Beijingers are also especially sensitive to face, thus they pay special attention to formalities.
  • Beijing businesspeople may automatically treat seriously and with great respect someone whose business card displays the title of board chair or president, especially of a big corporation.
  • Beijingers from all social strata and professions share this political zeal.
Business Culture in Shanghai
  • Shanghainese tend to treat Westerners more equally, thus allowing Western businesspeople to cooperate more easily with the Shanghainese. Shanghainese also tend to adopt Western ways of business and conform to international standards.
  • Contracts tend to be honored more often in Shanghai than in other parts of China.
  • Shanghainese also tend to focus on economic interests, value individualism, and emphasize practicality by ignoring politics and showing concern for individual interests.
  • In business negotiations, Shanghainese are generally professional, discreet, and attentive to minute details.
Business Culture in Guangzhou
  • Cantonese businesspeople are also usually more welcoming to outsiders, whether Chinese or foreign, and have also introduced foreign ideas to China.
  • Cantonese, like Shanghainese, were also less interested in politics and officialdom than Beijingers.
